What is Booting

What is Booting and Windows Advanced Option Menu

Booting means, to start a computer system and prepare the machine as live, interactive and usable to operator. A PC boot itself by executing the “Boot Strap” loader (Firmware) present in ROM on the Motherboard. In this process, Power-On Self Test (POST) is performed to make sure that the motherboard, input, output and i/o (BIOS) resources are good and in working condition. Then, it calls actual booting, i.e. loading OS from boot-source (Floppy/HDD/CD-ROM etc) as instructed from CMOS setup utility. Booting process is either started by system switch-on from electrical mains or pressing “Ctrl+Alt+Del” key combination – known as “Hardboot” and “Softboot” respectively.

The difference between hard-boot and soft-boot is that, POST is not executed in Soft-boot and only the new OS is reloaded in primary memory (RAM).
